Check out the Dine' Languages page! Learn Dine' words by hearing them spoken in Real Audio format!

You can also order the "Way of the Powwow," a DVD made for young people teaching what powwow is for, and why the dancer dress and move the way that they do at the powwow.

Just for Kids:
Did you know that when you see a Native American, that some kids make a "whoo-whoo-whoo" noise with their mouths, covering their mouth and whooping? And did you know that this is very disrespectful to Native People? That sound is heard in a lot of Hollywood movies, because the movies were made by non-Indian people who didn't know any better, but not knowing something is no excuse for being disrespectful, is it?
That sound, is one made by women at Powwow's and ceremonial gatherings, and they only make that sound when they are honoring someone. Boys and men never make that sound. Only women. And only at special times. So, when you see a Native American on the street or in your school, be respectful, and tell your friends the same thing. You wouldn't want anyone making fun of you!!
Also, when you watch Hollywood movies or cartoons, that drum that you hear going "BOOM boom boom boom, BOOM boom boom boom,BOOM boom boom boom," is also something from Hollywood. If you listen to real drums from a real powwow, drum group, or ceremony, the drum is usually just a straight beat. Sometimes, Rabbit, Owl, or other social dances have a double beat, but that's about the only time the drum isn't a straight beat.
Hollywood made a lot of movies about Indian people, and writers in the old days wrote a lot of books about Indian people, that just are plain wrong. So when you are reading books in school, ask lots of questions, and be sure that what you are seeing, reading, and hearing is real and authentic. Maybe you have a reservation nearby, with Indian people living there, or maybe you can go to a powwow with your mom and dad.

Montezuma Creek Elementary School is located on the Northeast side of the Dine' reservation in Utah/Arizona. Lots of kids go to school there, and you can write to them from their webpage. They'll write back to you too! Check em' out!

Here are some fun links, kid tested and kid approved. Check em' out!!
