In 2001, the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences chose to
debut a new category in the Grammy™ Folk awards category. The first
Native American Category Grammy™ went to Tom Bee and Douglas Spotted
Eagle/producers, for "Gathering of Nations
Powwow"/"Best Native American Recording."
-
"On behalf of all Native Americans," Bee continued amid loud
applause and cheers, "the musicians and singers everywhere - we'd
like to share this with all of you.
"I'd
like to thank all the drum groups who appeared on this record, 16 of them
in all. I'd also like to thank the Matthews family who produce this event
every year in Albuquerque, N.M. This is for them as well."
"Yaa
'teeh shi di deh," said co-producer Douglas Spotted Eagle, who took
time off from shooting a special for PBS in Oklahoma to receive the
Grammy. "I'd like to say this award goes out to all the drum groups
we've worked with for years."
